Art journaling is a deeply personal and creative process, and there are no “right” supplies to get started. You can create beautiful, meaningful pages with just a pen and paper—or dive into other materials if you’re feeling curious. This guide offers options to inspire you, whether you’re a beginner or ready to explore more possibilities.
Start Simply
These supplies are perfect if you’re just starting out and want to use what you already have:
Paper or Journal
Any notebook, sketchpad, or even loose sheets of paper can work.
If you’re looking to try more, mixed-media journals with thicker pages (90-140 lb) are great for handling paint or wet mediums. Here's the one I'm currently loving: https://amzn.to/3Zl3qCi
Pen or Pencil
A regular ballpoint pen or pencil is all you need to begin.
Want to explore more? Fine-tip pens and gel pens can add detail, while colored pens can bring vibrancy. I love these https://amzn.to/4ijNiZx or these if you want color https://amzn.to/3VadoUy
Markers or Crayons
These everyday items are perfect for adding color and doodles.
For those who want to expand: water-based markers blend beautifully (https://amzn.to/4eSzguB), and alcohol markers (https://amzn.to/3AY9Q0S) can add bold, vibrant hues.
Adhesives
Basic glue sticks, tape, or even DIY paste can work.
Curious to try something new? Double-sided tape or matte gel medium are great for collaging. Like these: https://amzn.to/3CLT5GT
Scissors or Tearing by Hand
Scissors are helpful but optional—tearing paper by hand can create beautiful, organic edges.
Exploring More: Play with New Materials
If you’re ready to experiment, here are some options to expand your creative toolkit:
Paints
Watercolors: Perfect for soft backgrounds or translucent layers. https://amzn.to/4fKqQ9W - full disclosure, I haven't used these in particular, but I splurged on these (https://amzn.to/3Zm199T) and I don't expect most people do to the same.
Acrylics: Great for bold colors, textures, and layering. https://amzn.to/4g42tUm
Brushes or Applicators
Even a simple foam brush or an old toothbrush can create interesting textures. https://amzn.to/4g7qABX
Collage Materials
Magazines, newspapers, old photos, ticket stubs, or anything meaningful to you.
Stamps & Stencils
Add patterns and structure to your pages using stamps, stencils, or even household items like leaves, sponges, or bubble wrap.
Writing Tools
Experiment with gel pens, fountain pens, or chalk for unique effects.
Washi Tape or Decorative Tape
Perfect for borders, accents, or securing lightweight materials. https://amzn.to/4g3Gxsz
DIY and Found Items
Some of the best supplies aren’t bought—they’re found or repurposed. Try these for unique touches:
Nature: Leaves, flowers, or sandpaper for texture.
Household Items: Aluminum foil, cardboard, or even coffee grounds.
Repurposed Materials: Scrap fabric, packaging, or old book pages.
A Note on Supplies
There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to art journaling. Your supplies should reflect your creativity, budget, and what brings you joy. Whether you’re using a ballpoint pen or exploring with paint and stencils, the most important thing is to start—and let your journal evolve with you.
